Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't Safari's own export include the Reading List?
Safari's File > Export > Bookmarks writes your bookmarks only - the Reading List is silently skipped. It exists solely inside Bookmarks.plist, a binary file this tool knows how to read.
Where do I find Bookmarks.plist?
In Finder choose Go > Go to Folder and paste ~/Library/Safari - then copy Bookmarks.plist to your Desktop and drop that copy above. Copying it first avoids any permission complaints from macOS.
Are the dates I saved articles kept?
Yes. The Reading List stores when you added each item, and both the bookmarks HTML and the CSV export keep those dates.
Is my Reading List uploaded anywhere?
No. The plist is decoded entirely in your browser - the file never leaves your Mac.
How do I get my Reading List into another browser?
Download the bookmarks HTML and import it: Chrome, Edge, or Brave via Bookmark manager > Import bookmarks, Firefox via Manage bookmarks > Import and Backup. Your Reading List arrives as a normal bookmark folder.
